Hi Pam,
I completely agree with you... but, people who still use synthetic fragrances are unable to detect the awfulness, only because these chemicals dull the sense of smell. Thing is, until she 'smells' it for herself, your mother just won't get it. It takes patience from us nature lovers! I can walk behind people in town and the smell of fabric conditioner just knocks me over, I can even detect if a person has used a synthetic shower gel in the morning... I am that sensitive!
Being an Aromatherapist we did a bit of work in how the body detects aroma... I have attached a handy link, that explains the sense of smell...
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question139.htmOne thing to be aware of, when we 'smell' molecules, these molecules go straight to the brain for detection, so, if people are in contact with synthetic chemicals day in day out... they are exposing their brains to all sorts of chemicals... the blood brain barrier is the easiest for aroma molecules to pass through.
Personally, I would be rather choosy in what chemicals I'm smelling on a daily basis, only because synthetics can contain up to 200 individual synthetic chemicals under one heading 'fragrance' - AND THAT
COULD BE IN ONE PRODUCT - can you imagine how many synthetic chemicals we sniff per day???
