Oily Dandruff

Oily Dandruff

Hi my teenage daughter suffers from oily hair and dandruff. I wondered if anybody can advise on a suitable shampoo to use. Has anybody tried the powder cleansers? My son suffers from eczema so these sound quite good to use for him also. Thanks for any help

Hi Lucinda, nice to meet you, and welcome :)

The feedback I receive from my customers with oily and/or dandruff tendencies is that the gentle based shampoos work wonders for both conditions.

Using a less harsh detergent doesn't irritate the scalp to further produce oil, in order to keep the skin's acid mantle in order. When harsh shampoo based detergents are used, the skin produces oil as a defense mechanism, to protect it’s pH balance, which results in over oiliness = Oily Hair.

In drier scalp cases, the harsh detergents can just completely make the scalp very dry, and prone to flaking and itching (Dandruff). Using a less harsh detergent based shampoo will help to stop this from happening.

My usual customer's feedback suggests that it takes about a month to notice a difference, which does concur with how long the skin takes to form from the base to the outer layer.

Of course, there could be another explanation, stress/health related, but using harsh detergents are the most common and so should be ruled out first.

Finally, I normally recommend the powder cleansers for highly sensitive people, who just cannot use the mildest of natural mild detergent based shampoos. The reason for this is that it can be time consuming to create the mixture, and also, it can be quite a messy ordeal, especially when using the dark brown powder. But yes, the powder cleansers would be the best to use if someone was suffering from skin complaints, ie. to use them short term whilst waiting for the skin to normalise itself.

I hope this helps with your query?

Don’t hesitate to ask for more clarification, if you need more.
All my best,
Angie

Hello Lucinda,

Your daughter probably has the sensitive scalp, just like Angie said, I have the same condition and I believe these scalp anomalies are indeed caused by too much use of shampoo, usage of shampoos that have very high contents of chemicals/scalp detergents, eating fatty foods especially those of nuts, potatoes, rice and processed and preserved food products, lack of sleep and many others i may point out but the mentioned causes are probably the main reasons.

Since it has already been explained that the manner of usage and type of shampoos probably deters the ph level of your scalp and that too much acidity on your scalp causes formation of the dreaded dandruff and the oily deluge on your scalp's outer surface. Given that, the best solution as said, is the use of less active shampoo, less chemical content.

Other than that of course diet and your food consumption can cause this hair nightmarish condition. We have pores in every part of our skin and probably the scalp has the most wide open ones. Provided such, we can deduct that like our facial dilemmas, our over oily scalps are caused by pores spewing much oil on the surface and plus it is summer season by which the temperature triggers excretion of bodily liquids on the skin, it is expected that one who has been too much careless on her fatty food intake will experience this oily hair condition.

Sleep or lack of sleep also does the same effect though I couldn't really explain the more detailed method of dandruff and oil production of the scalp, I believe it is the over-activity of the system that causes these problems.

Take care of your health and have a well balanced meal..... God Bless....

PS: Your daughter will be in good hands, so for assurances consult the professionals :D

Funny you should mention about the amount of pores on the scalp melanotan ... there are so many more present on the scalp, or rather more importantly, hair follicles present than on the body! When you really think about this, the more chances there is of absorption to occur on the scalp... considering the saying "60% of what you use, gets absorbed by the skin" but I would personally add... if the molecules are small enough to be absorbed... !!! So this saying does not necessarily relate to all ingredients! So, there is more potential for people to suffer with scalp allergies than the bodily skin.

However, Aubrey Organics carry this rather good shampoo, Calaguala Fern Treatment Shampoo that helps people with over sensitive/dandruff scalps. Very good feedback has been received with regards to how people have found solace in this product.
All my best,
Angie
